Student’s apparent strengths and needs:
The student seemed to be able to sound out and properly read
most of the words in the passage. She seemed to have difficulties sounding out
specific vowel sounds, such as the short ‘u’ sound as in the word ‘must’, which
she read as ‘most’. She also had trouble with the long vowel ‘I’ sound, reading
the word ‘live’ as the word 'lived'. She was able to self-correct herself a
number of times but had to be told by the teacher how to read the word
‘through’. She displayed trouble once more with the digraph ‘-ou’ as she
misread the word ‘though’ as the word ‘thot’. She could probably use some
review with vowel sounds and digraphs, but she demonstrated that she is
self-monitoring her reading and gave an over-all great reading performance. Her comprehension seemed up to par as well as she was able to discuss the whales and fish she was reading about.
